Selection Process at the Courthouse

Once the group of prospective jurors is assembled, attorneys for both the prosecution and the defense begin Voire Dire.  Voire dire is a preliminary examination of the prospective jurors, in order to inquire into their competence and suitability to sit on the jury.  The attorneys examine the jurors in order to eliminate jurors who may be biased against their side.  Attorneys are allowed to reject potential jurors either by dismissing anyone for cause or by issuing a limited number of peremptory challenges, which are dismissals that do not require a reason.
